Answers to
Frequently questions

There are circumstances when you absolutely CANNOT use Shopify Payments and you must use an Alternative Payment Provider. Here’s a list of justifiable circumstances;

  • You sell items that are in Shopify’s prohibited categories (e.g. alcohol)
  • Some of your products have ingredients that are prohibited by Shopify Payments (such as CBD)
  • You don’t have a registered business and a local bank account in a given territory
  • You have catch-all stores that aren’t territory-specific (e.g. EU or ROW)
  • You’re selling in a territory where Shopify Payments isn’t available (e.g. France)

A Direct Payment Provider (DPP), is a Merchant Services Provider offering credit card and debit card acceptance solutions that directly integrate into Shopify’ checkout page.

Unlike an External Payment Provider, services offered by a DPP do not require an external payment gateway. This means, customers are not redirected away from Shopify’s checkout page when entering credit card information to complete the transaction.

An External Payment Provider (EPP) is one of several hundred Merchant Services Providers that offers services to businesses using Shopify.

Shopify refers to these service providers as “external” because a merchant must use Authorize.net, PinWheel Payment Gateway, or a separate payment gateway as a bridge or connection between the cardholder and Shopify.

A separate payment gateway typically involves a  $15.00 to $25.00 fixed monthly recurring fee. Furthermore, Shopify will add a fee of 1% or 2% to each transaction depending on the hosting package selected by the merchant.

During the checkout experience, the buyer is redirected away from the Shopify checkout page to enter their credit card information.
